Job Description:

Under the guidance of senior environmental professionals, the Student Intern will support a range of natural science and environmental planning activities related to transportation, municipal, and infrastructure projects. The role provides hands-on exposure to fisheries, terrestrial ecology, and environmental assessment work, combining field investigations with office-based data management, analysis, and reporting. This position is intended to support academic learning through practical experience while developing foundational skills in environmental consulting, regulatory processes, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with environmental field investigations and data collection for fisheries and terrestrial ecology studies, including vegetation inventories, wildlife observations, habitat assessments, and environmental monitoring activities.

  • Support environmental planning and assessment tasks, including background reviews, constraints identification, and compilation of environmental information to support project decision-making.

  • Collect, organize, and manage field data, photographs, and notes in accordance with established protocols and quality standards.

  • Assist with the preparation of technical memoranda, tables, figures, and report sections under the direction of senior staff.

  • Support mapping and spatial data tasks, including basic GIS work such as data entry, map preparation, and review of environmental features.

  • Participate in construction-phase environmental monitoring activities, as required, to support compliance with environmental commitments and permits.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams and follow health, safety, and environmental procedures during both field and office work.

  • Contribute to maintaining organized project files and documentation.

Education and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in, or recently completed, a post-secondary program in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, or a related field.

  • Academic coursework or field experience related to fisheries, wildlife, vegetation, or environmental planning is an asset.

  • Familiarity with Ontario natural environments and basic awareness of environmental legislation (e.g., Fisheries Act, Endangered Species Act, Species at Risk Act) is considered an asset.

  • Experience with data collection, fieldwork, or environmental studies through school, volunteer work, or previous internships is an asset.

  • Exposure to GIS or mapping software (e.g., ArcGIS) is preferred but not required.

  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn and apply standard scientific and environmental assessment methods.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced project environment.

  • Willingness to travel to field sites as required.

- Bachelor's Degree in a environmental science, studies, biology, or planning
- 0+ years of related work experience

Salary Range: $19.95 - $39.18
