Job Description:
Parsons is looking for a SME – Bridges and Tunnels Expert! Provide specialized technical expertise in the planning, design, and delivery of bridge and tunnel infrastructure. Ensure all structural solutions are technically sound, cost-efficient, safe, and compliant with applicable standards and authority requirements, supporting the development of world-class transportation networks.
What You’ll Be Doing
Technical Leadership – Bridges & Tunnels
Provide technical leadership for the design, engineering, and assessment of bridges, tunnels, underpasses, and associated structures.
Review, validate, and enhance structural solutions, including:
Superstructure and substructure elements
Foundations and ground–structure interaction
Seismic design and load ratings
Constructability and construction staging
Oversee and guide consultants and contractors in:
Structural design methodologies
Tunnel alignment planning
Underground construction techniques
Codes, Standards, & Geotechnical Integration
Ensure designs adhere to international and national standards such as AASHTO, Eurocodes, BS, MOT, MoMRA, and other relevant codes.
Evaluate geotechnical reports and subsurface conditions to determine optimal:
Structural solutions for bridges and underground structures
Tunnel construction methods (e.g. TBM, cut-and-cover, NATM)
Tunneling Machines & Construction Methodologies
Lead and review all design activities related to tunneling machines.
Specify appropriate machine types based on geotechnical and alignment conditions, including EPB TBMs, slurry TBMs, Mixshield, Double Shield, and Gripper TBMs.
Define tunneling machine thrust and torque requirements and key performance criteria.
Assess and benchmark various tunneling construction solutions based on:
Project context and geology
Urban constraints and environmental factors
Cost-efficiency and constructability
Global tunneling case studies and innovations
Provide strategic input on the selection of tunneling construction methodologies aligned with:
Project goals and schedule
Local authority requirements
Risk mitigation strategies
Industry Engagement & Innovation
Engage with global tunneling solution providers, machine manufacturers, and specialist contractors to stay updated on:
Latest equipment and automation technologies
Digital monitoring, instrumentation, and data-driven construction methods
Keep abreast of innovations in structural engineering and tunneling technologies to inform project solutions and value engineering
Risk, Approvals & Documentation
Support risk assessments and mitigation plans for:
Deep excavations
Tunneling works
Bridge construction and complex structural interventions
Lead the preparation and review of:
Technical specifications
Tender documents
Cost estimates
Material selection and performance criteria
Review structural analysis models and drawings prepared by consultants, ensuring:
Technical accuracy
Compliance with codes and authority requirements
Consistency between design intent and construction documents
Support authority approval processes and participate in:
Technical presentations
Formal submissions and clarifications
Integration, Value Engineering & Construction Support
Collaborate with design, geotechnical, traffic, and utility teams to:
Resolve interface challenges
Optimize structural integration in complex corridors and urban environments
Contribute to value engineering exercises for bridge and tunnel designs to:
Improve efficiency
Reduce cost
Enhance maintainability and lifecycle performance
Monitor construction activities related to bridges and tunnels to ensure:
Adherence to design and specifications
Appropriate quality control and safety standards
What Required Skills You’ll Bring
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering
Master’s degree or specialized certification in bridge or tunnel engineering preferred
Chartered Engineer status (e.g. PE, CEng, or equivalent) is an advantage
15+ years of experience in the design and delivery of major bridge and tunnel infrastructure
Demonstrated involvement in international or large-scale urban projects with complex technical and stakeholder environments
