AIMS Construction Program

The Antarctic Infrastructure and Modernization for Science (AIMS) project is an initiative of the National Science Foundation's (NSF) United States Antarctic Program (USAP) and is a major capital investment effort to support the United States' world-class science program in Antarctica. The infrastructure modernization being proposed under the AIMS project is to ensure that McMurdo Station remains a viable platform for supporting Antarctic science for the next 35 to 50 years. Parsons is the designer and builder for the Antarctic Infrastructure Improvement (AIMS) efforts under the Antarctic Support Contract with the National Science Foundation. You will be involved in the largest construction project ever performed on the continent of Antarctica.

You will work on-site at McMurdo Station during the austral summer season from October to March. You will deploy through New Zealand to Antarctica and will be part of the on-site management team to deliver this flagship project for the NSF and Parsons during site activities.

Position Overview:

Under the general direction of the Safety Manager, ensures that the project safety plan is being implemented and complied with in compliance with corporate policy and prevailing USAP safety requirements for the region. Ensures that subcontractors have implemented and comply with their safety plan and in compliance with the project’s safety plan. Conduct field inspections, document control, and provide guidance on safety related issues. Coordinate with Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) safety and Construction Management teams, emergency medical services, Solid & hazardous waste teams, and Parsons construction teams. Help manage inventory control of basic PPE for all visitors and Parsons workers, conduct portions of site orientations, and basic Direct Reading Instrument measurements as required. Will report to the project safety & health manager and represent the project safety & health manager as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Helps administers project safety program and advises and assists the construction team on the safety program, Parsons ESHARP & SH&E processes, identifying and eliminating/controlling any hazards to persons and property.
  • Audits and inspects job site to detect and correct safety hazards.
  • Monitors the safety performance of all construction operations in assigned job site areas with respect to one or more elements of ESHARP Management and the Parsons Corporate Safety & Health Processes.
  • Assists with incident investigations, incident reports, and incident record analysis.
  • Conducts new hire safety orientation and other safety related training.
  • Performs administrative duties as required.
  • Supervises first aid personnel in providing first aid care of occupationally injured or ill personnel.
  • Assist with daily safety huddles and weekly toolbox training.
  • Conduct audits and inspection of work areas, machinery, equipment, and working conditions for compliance with occupational safety and health regulations.
  • Conducts risk assessments for upcoming work and provides technical assistance to the safety planning process.
  • Assists with the writing of safety documentation including Activity Hazard Analysis, Lessons Learned, Project Safety Plans, etc.
  • Assists administering environmental and waste management plans.
  • Performs other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Minimum of a two-year associate degree or four-year degree in Occupational Safety and Health or related field and between 3+ years of safety and health experience in the construction field or 5+ years of 75% safety role in the commercial construction field
  • A good working knowledge of Federal and state health and safety regulations and reporting procedures.
  • Basic Industrial Hygiene knowledge and process skills.
  • Good ability to quickly pivot and provide out of the box solutions while working in a remote area.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to be in a remote location for long periods of time.
  • Basic understanding and use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), PDF editing software (Adobe, Adobe Pro, Revu Bluebeam).
  • Able to understand the basics of construction drawings.

Preferred Qualifications/Skills:

  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP) or Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST) or Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST).
  • Knowledge of US Army Corps of Engineers EM-385-1-1 Safety & Health Manual.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 241 and other related NFPA codes.
  • OSHA 30-hour Construction (will be required to get if you do not possess at time of hire).
  • Knowledge of ANSI standards related to safety and health.
  • Experience with heavy civil construction, steel erection, Structurally Insulated Panel erection, or crane/rigging work a plus.

***Must be able to pass the National Science Foundation Polar Physical Qualification Process (COVID Vaccination required per PQ), and an Electronic Background Investigation (for access to NSF Facilities, for which project is located on)***

Salary Range: 

$29.42 - $51.49
