Job Description:
Parsons is looking for an amazingly talented Road & Traffic Design Engineering Technician to join our team! In this role you will support our roadway and traffic engineering teams in preparing high-quality concept plans and design drawings that meet current design standards and agency requirements.
You will work with minimal day-to-day instruction to translate engineering mark-ups, sketches, and design inputs into clear, accurate, and well-organized plan sets for roads, intersections, corridors, and traffic control devices. You will help ensure that our deliverables are technically sound, easy to review, and consistent with the client’s preferred standards and presentation formats.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Prepare roadway and traffic engineering concept plans, layouts, and details based on engineer direction, sketches, design criteria, and applicable standards.
- Develop and update drawings such as horizontal layouts, typical sections, intersection layouts, access and channelization plans, signing and pavement marking plans, traffic signal layouts, and work zone/traffic control plans.
- Apply current roadway, traffic engineering, and safety design standards (e.g., geometric design, lane configurations, sight distance, crosswalks, turn lanes) to ensure compliance in concept-level drawings.
- Organize drawings and sheets in accordance with client CAD standards, file naming conventions, layer standards, symbology, and presentation requirements.
- Interpret and incorporate redlines, comments, and design revisions from engineers and discipline leads in a timely and accurate manner.
- Coordinate with other designers and technicians to ensure consistent use of standards, symbols, notes, and drawing templates across multiple projects.
- Assist in preparing quantities take-offs and simple tabulations (e.g., signing schedules, marking quantities, lane use tables) directly from the design drawings.
- Support the preparation of exhibits and figures for technical reports, presentations, and stakeholder meetings, using clear and professional graphic layouts.
- Maintain and update blocks, detail libraries, and standard drawing templates to reflect current agency requirements and best practices.
- Perform basic quality checks on your own work (and when requested, on others’ work) to confirm completeness, drafting accuracy, and adherence to standards.
- Work closely with project engineers and project managers to understand design intent, priorities, and deadlines, and proactively raise issues affecting drawing production.
What Required Skills You’ll Bring:
- Associate’s degree (or equivalent technical diploma) in civil engineering technology, drafting/design technology, or a closely related field.
- Minimum 5 years of practical experience as a roadway/traffic design technician or CAD designer supporting transportation engineering projects.
- Proven ability to perform with minimal day-to-day instruction, taking ownership of assigned drawings from initial setup through to final issue.
- Strong working knowledge of roadway and traffic design standards and requirements, and how they are presented on plans (linework, symbols, notes, legends, and sheet organization).
- Proficiency with industry-standard CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D and/or MicroStation/OpenRoads) for 2D plan production on transportation projects.
- Experience preparing concept-level plans for roads, intersections, corridors, signing and pavement markings, and traffic control/maintenance-of-traffic layouts.
- Familiarity with client or agency CAD standards and typical plan sheet formats, and the ability to learn and apply new standards quickly.
- Strong attention to detail, with a focus on drawing clarity, consistency, and constructability.
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English and the ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary design team.
What Desired Skills You’ll Bring:
- Experience supporting major transportation agencies or large municipal/public works departments on roadway or traffic design projects.
- Exposure to ITS and traffic signal layout plans, including basic device locations and conduit/duct routes under engineer guidance.
- Familiarity with 3D modeling/BIM tools for roads and highways is an advantage.
- Experience working in a multi-office, multi-discipline project delivery environment.
