A Resident Engineer (Structure) is a senior-level professional responsible for overseeing and managing all structural aspects of a construction project. They act as the on-site representative of the client or consultant and ensure that the structural works are executed according to the approved designs, specifications, quality standards, and safety regulations. Below is a detailed breakdown of their roles and responsibilities:
What You'll Be Doing:
1. Project Supervision and Oversight
Oversee all structural construction activities on-site to ensure compliance with approved drawings, specifications, and project requirements.
Supervise contractors and subcontractors to ensure that structural works are executed as per the project schedule and quality standards.
Act as the primary point of contact for all structural-related issues on-site.
2. Review of Structural Designs and Drawings
Review and interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, and specifications to ensure clarity and accuracy.
Identify discrepancies or conflicts in design documents and coordinate with the design team to resolve them.
Ensure that any design changes or revisions are implemented correctly on-site.
3. Quality Assurance and Control
Monitor the quality of materials and workmanship for all structural elements, such as foundations, columns, beams, slabs, walls, and retaining structures.
Conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards, and project specifications.
Approve or reject materials and workmanship that do not meet quality requirements.
4. Coordination with Stakeholders
Collaborate with project managers, contractors, consultants, and other engineers to ensure smooth execution of structural works.
Liaise with design consultants to address technical queries or design-related issues.
Communicate progress, challenges, and solutions to the client or project management team.
5. Monitoring Construction Progress
Track the progress of structural works to ensure they are completed on time and within budget.
Identify potential delays or bottlenecks and recommend corrective actions to maintain the project schedule.
Verify that structural works are completed before subsequent construction activities proceed.
6. Safety Compliance
Ensure that all structural works are carried out in compliance with safety regulations and standards.
Monitor site activities to identify and mitigate potential safety hazards related to structural works.
Promote a culture of safety among workers and contractors.
7. Testing and Verification
Witness and verify structural tests, such as concrete compressive strength tests, rebar tensile tests, and soil compaction tests.
Ensure that non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, such as ultrasonic or radiographic testing, are conducted when required.
Maintain records of test results and ensure compliance with quality benchmarks.
8. Change Management
Review and approve structural change requests or variations, ensuring they are justified and documented.
Assess the impact of changes on the project schedule, budget, and scope.
Coordinate with the design team and contractors to implement approved changes.
9. Documentation and Reporting
Maintain detailed records of structural works, including inspection reports, test results, and approvals.
Prepare and submit regular progress reports to the client or project management team.
Document any non-conformances and track their resolution.
10. Problem-Solving and Decision-Making
Address and resolve technical issues or challenges that arise during the construction of structural elements.
Provide on-site solutions to unforeseen conditions or conflicts between design and site conditions.
Make informed decisions to ensure the structural integrity and safety of the project.
11. Compliance with Codes and Standards
Ensure that all structural works comply with relevant building codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., ACI, BS, Eurocodes, or local standards).
Stay updated on changes to structural engineering standards and practices.
Ensure that the project meets all regulatory and permitting requirements.
12. Leadership and Mentorship
Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, inspectors, and site staff.
Foster a collaborative and professional working environment on-site.
Represent the client or consultant in meetings with contractors, stakeholders, and regulatory authorities.
What Required Skills You'll Bring:
Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Master's degree is a plus).
Minimum 15 years post graduate experience in supervision, and construction management of major infrastructure projects like roads and bridges.
Proven and mandatory experience of minimum 2 years in structural engineering and construction supervision on large-scale infrastructure projects, within Abu Dhabi.
Familiarity with structural analysis and design software (e.g., ETABS, STAAD Pro) and project management tools.
Strong understanding of structural design principles, construction methods, and materials.
Familiarity with structural codes and standards (e.g., ACI, BS, Eurocodes, or local standards).
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with contractors, consultants, and clients.
Ability to address and resolve technical and construction-related issues effectively.
Strong leadership and decision-making skills to manage teams and ensure project success.
