As a Principal Engineering Coordinator, you will play a pivotal role in delivering innovative, practical solutions for complex engineering projects that enhance the fabric of our communities.
This senior-level position combines advanced technical expertise, strategic project management, and leadership responsibilities. You will oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of multidisciplinary engineering projects, ensuring technical excellence, on-time delivery, and financial performance. You will work closely with clients, internal teams, and external stakeholders to manage projects through their full lifecycle—from concept and feasibility (pre-FEED) to commissioning and startup.
As a key leader, you will mentor junior staff, manage client relationships, and contribute to the development of organizational standards and best practices. This role is ideal for a seasoned professional with a passion for engineering, a proven ability to manage teams, and a desire to make a lasting impact.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical:
- Plan, lead, and conduct advanced design work on building structures and other engineering projects, applying expert judgment and innovative solutions to complex challenges.
- Oversee the preparation of technical drawings, visual aids, and documentation, ensuring accuracy and alignment with project objectives.
- Conduct and guide research efforts to solve technical problems, providing innovative and practical solutions.
- Serve as a technical advisor to project teams, guiding Designers and junior engineers on complex tasks and ensuring high-quality deliverables.
- Perform and enforce QA/QC (Quality Assurance/Quality Control) protocols for all technical deliverables under your oversight.
- Stay current with industry standards, trends, and emerging technologies, and share insights with the team to enhance technical capabilities.
Project Management:
- Support engineering projects through their full lifecycle, including feasibility, FEED, detailed engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning phases.
- Provide project management support on industrial capital projects ranging from $200K to $5M.
- Collaborate with Project Managers to develop detailed project plans, allocate resources, and track financial performance, including earned value management.
- Oversee project controls and other project service functions, ensuring alignment with project goals and baselines.
- Monitor project progress, identify risks, and implement corrective actions to keep projects on track.
- Draft and maintain project baselines, including execution and commercial baselines, and ensure they are fully documented and communicated to the project team.
- Capture changes to project work scopes with clients and subcontractors, ensuring timely and accurate change order management.
- Promote technical and commercial excellence on projects through the application of Quality Assurance processes.
- Monitor and report on project progress, milestones, and any conditions that could affect cost or schedule.
Client and Stakeholder Engagement:
- Interface with clients and selected subcontractors during program execution.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, ensuring their needs are met and identifying opportunities for additional services.
- Participate in sales and marketing efforts, including preparing proposals and presentations.
- Represent the organization in client meetings, industry events, and other external engagements, enhancing the company’s reputation and visibility.
Leadership and Mentorship:
- Provide leadership and mentorship to junior staff, including Designers, Engineering Coordinators, and other team members, fostering their technical and professional growth.
- Supervise and provide technical guidance to lower-level Engineering Coordinators and Engineering Aides.
- Participate in hiring interviews, onboarding, and training of new team members, ensuring they are equipped to succeed in their roles.
- Contribute to the performance review process, providing constructive feedback and guidance to team members.
- Act as a role model for collaboration, professionalism, and technical excellence, inspiring confidence and trust among team members and clients.
Operational and Strategic Contributions:
- Identify and recommend enhancements to operational procedures to improve efficiency, quality, and client satisfaction.
- Gain and apply a deep understanding of organizational risks associated with technical, legal, and financial aspects of projects.
- Contribute to the strategic planning process by sharing insights on industry trends, client needs, and organizational improvements.
- Develop and refine Engineering and Drawing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to improve efficiency and consistency across projects.
Key Relationships:
- Supervision Received: Project Manager, District Manager, Supervising Specialist, Lead Specialist.
- Supervision Given: Lower-level Engineering Coordinators, Engineering Aides (technical guidance only).
- Internal Contacts: All employees on the project, including all engineering disciplines.
- External Contacts: Clients, suppliers, subcontractors, and other external stakeholders.
What Required Skills You’ll Bring:
- 5–8 years of prior experience on engineering projects.
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Strong technical expertise in engineering design, with experience in building structures or related disciplines.
- Proven ability to manage projects, interface with clients, and lead multidisciplinary teams.
- Advanced proficiency in project management tools and methodologies, including earned value management, scheduling software (e.g., Microsoft Project, Primavera), and financial tracking.
- Proficient keyboard skills and working knowledge of MS Windows, word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with experience preparing correspondence, reports, presentations, and proposals.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple complex projects concurrently.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working on industrial capital projects, including feasibility, FEED, and detailed engineering phases.
- Experience in client relationship management and business development.
