Job Description:
Parsons is now hiring a Finance Intern to support the Engineering Solutions division in the Northern Virginia area!
What Qualifications You'll Bring:
- Students currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in an Accounting
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills.
- Good analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills to evaluate business problems and apply knowledge to identify appropriate solutions.
- Must be eager to learn, self-motivated, flexible, accountable and can effectively handle multiple tasks at one time.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills. Detail-oriented.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, Project.
Key Responsibilities
1. Exposure to Full Contract Life Cycle
The intern will gain hands-on experience across all phases of the contract life cycle:
New Awards / Project Setup
- Assist in setting up new project structures within financial systems (WBS, charge codes, funding alignment)
- Support contract review to identify key financial terms (funding, contract type, ceilings)
- Help validate data entry accuracy for newly awarded contracts
- Coordinate with Project Managers and Finance to ensure proper project initialization
Project Execution / Ongoing Financial Management
- Assist with project forecasting (revenue, cost, and funding projections)
- Support variance analysis by comparing actuals vs. budget/forecast
- Help identify and research cost variances and anomalies
- Compile financial data for internal reporting and program reviews
- Track funding and expenditures to ensure alignment with contract limits
Contract Closeout
- Assist with financial reconciliations for contract closeouts
- Help review project balances to ensure all costs are recorded accurately
- Support de-obligation and final invoice preparation activities
- Ensure documentation is complete and compliant with audit requirements
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams to resolve outstanding financial items
2. Project Controller Monthly Cycle Support
The intern will learn and assist with recurring monthly financial processes:
Financial Data Reconciliation
- Assist with reconciling financial data between systems
- Support month-end close activities, including data validation and cleanup
- Help prepare journal entry support and backup documentation as needed
Timekeeping & Labor Review
- Assist in reviewing employee timecards for accuracy and compliance
- Reconcile labor data across multiple systems
- Identify and escalate discrepancies or missing entries
- Support audit readiness by ensuring proper documentation of labor charges
Billing Review & Approval
- Assist in preparing and reviewing customer invoices for accuracy and compliance
- Support compilation of required documentation for invoice substantiation
- Ensure billing aligns with contract terms (e.g., cost-plus, fixed price, T&M)
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders to resolve billing issues prior to submission
Unbilled Reconciliation
- Assist in reconciling unbilled receivables to ensure accuracy and completeness
- Investigate discrepancies between incurred costs and billed amounts
- Support preparation of supporting schedules for unbilled balances
Other duties, as assigned.
3. Additional Learning Opportunities
- Gain exposure to federal contracting regulations and compliance requirements (e.g., FAR, CAS)
- Participate in internal financial reviews and project status meetings
- Learn financial systems commonly used in government contracting environments
- Assist with the reconciliation and update of new forecasting tools.
- Develop analytical, problem-solving, and Excel/data management skills
