Job Description:
Parsons is seeking a highly motivated and accomplished Bridge Project Engineer to support our growing New York transportation practice, as well as support our Florida structures team. This role will lead and deliver bridge engineering efforts for major NYSDOT, NYCDOT, authority, and regional transportation projects across New York and Florida.
You will provide both technical leadership and project management for the design and rehabilitation of bridges and related structures that are integral to NY and FL’s highway, arterial, and transit networks. Typical scopes include preliminary and final design, contract documents, cost estimates, project scheduling, and overall project delivery, including coordination with subconsultants and other disciplines. This position requires a strong track record delivering complex bridge design and design‑build projects and a solid understanding of State DOT standards, procedures, and design manuals.
The role will be hybrid, reporting to local Parsons office (preferred 3 days a week).
What You'll Be Doing:
Lead and manage bridge design and rehabilitation projects for NYSDOT, NYCDOT, FDOT and other transportation agencies in NY and FL.
Oversee preliminary and final bridge design, including development of plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E).
Prepare and review steel, concrete (and where applicable timber) design calculations, quantity take‑offs, cost estimates, and technical reports.
Direct and coordinate multiple span steel and concrete bridge designs, including girders, superstructures, substructures, and foundations.
Manage project scope, budget, and schedule; track progress, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies.
Lead preparation and coordination of construction documents, including general notes, details, and special specifications consistent with NYSDOT, FDOT and other state agency standards.
Perform and/or oversee detailed structural analyses, including finite element modeling and load rating, ensuring compliance with AASHTO LRFD and local requirements.
Supervise, mentor, and technically guide junior and mid‑level engineers and CAD/BIM designers.
Review and approve shop drawings, supplier submittals, and RFIs; perform technical bid evaluations as needed.
Coordinate with internal disciplines (highway, geotechnical, traffic, environmental) and external stakeholders (clients, subconsultants, contractors, and agencies).
Support design‑build pursuits and proposals, including development of technical concepts, schedules, and level‑of‑effort estimates.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited institution.
10+ years of progressive bridge design and project engineering experience, preferably on New York State and regional transportation projects.
Professional Engineer (PE) license in New York and Florida (or ability to obtain)
Demonstrated experience delivering multi‑span steel and concrete bridge projects (new design and/or rehabilitation), including:
Proven experience managing bridge design and design‑build projects for state DOTs or similar transportation agencies.
Strong familiarity with relevant state DOT standards, manuals, and standard sheets (and/or other New York transportation agency standards).
Proficiency with bridge and structural design software such as:
MicroStation (required, or strong equivalent with ability to transition quickly)
LEAP Bridge (Conspan, RC Pier) or similar
MDX / Merlin Dash, or equivalent girder design software
Finite element analysis tools (e.g., LARSA, SAP2000, STAAD, CSI products, or similar).
Desired Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.
SE license or advanced structural certification is a plus.
Experience with NYCDOT, MTA, TBTA, PANYNJ, or other New York–area transportation agencies.
Experience with FDOT, or other Florida–area transportation agencies.
Background in accelerated bridge construction (ABC), complex staging, or urban bridge retrofits.
Experience with OpenBridge Designer, 3D modeling, or BIM for bridges.
Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, interface directly with clients, and contribute to business development and proposal efforts.
