Job Description:
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Technical Specialist - Hydrogen to serve as a senior technical leader and subject matter expert (SME) for our growing clean energy portfolio. In this role, you will provide top-tier technical guidance and advisory services across clean energy and especially hydrogen production, storage, delivery, dispensing, and blending infrastructure projects.
Rather than serving in a traditional project management capacity, this strategic role focuses on providing technical oversight, identifying emerging market opportunities and establishing connections with potential clients, and cultivating internal technical talent. The ideal candidate will leverage extensive industry experience and strategic relationships to position Parsons as a premier partner for decarbonization solutions across North America for clean and alternative energy projects with a focus on Hydrogen.
Job Posting
Parsons is now hiring a Technical Specialist – Hydrogen with a proven track record in hydrogen infrastructure, gaseous fuel systems, and clean transportation to be based in Canada and support projects across North America. Parsons’ extensive experience in the energy sector, combined with your specialized engineering knowledge and industry insight, will provide an exceptional opportunity to shape the future of clean energy infrastructure.
As a Technical Specialist – Hydrogen, you will focus on building technical excellence internally and driving business growth. You will serve as a premier technical advisor across all project horizons, from near-term pilot studies and regulatory navigation to mid-term detailed design, safety auditing, and long-term asset optimization. In this role, you will actively participate in high-level client engagement, guide design and engineering activities, and the mentorship of our internal engineering teams. We are seeking a versatile professional with exceptional communication, analytical, and relationship-building skills who can deliver practical, code-compliant, and forward-looking hydrogen solutions.
Responsibilities
- Serves as the primary technical lead and subject matter expert for hydrogen generation, storage, compression, delivery, and refueling infrastructure, tailoring solutions for bus transit, hydrail, industrial applications, and heavy freight.
- Supports client pursuit and market entry strategies across North America by participating in proposal development, conducting technical presentations, and leveraging industry relationships to open doors with key transit agencies, rail operators, municipalities, and utility providers.
- Leads high-level planning, feasibility studies, conceptual/preliminary design, and front-end engineering design (FEED) for high-pressure hydrogen refueling stations (HRS), corridor build-outs, and localized municipal hydrogen hubs.
- Spearheads internal resource development by mentoring and training engineering staff, sharing industry best practices, and building robust internal capabilities across multiple engineering disciplines to support alternative fuel technologies.
- Establishes technical requirements and criteria for alternative energy assignments, conducting peer reviews and safety risk mitigation reviews on draft and final deliverables to ensure compliance with project objectives, codes, and client expectations.
- Provides expert guidance on hydrogen integration into existing natural gas infrastructure, including transmission pipeline blending studies, compatibility reviews, and network decarbonization roadmaps.
- Facilitates and participates in specialized risk and safety workshops, including Hazard Identification (HAZID), Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) studies, and Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRA) for permanent and temporary hydrogen facilities.
- Represents clients and Parsons in public meetings, regulatory discussions, funding/grant alignment strategies, and workshops with regional and federal Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) to facilitate project approvals.
- Advises public and private sectors on long-term corporate decarbonization strategies, multi-modal integration hubs (ports, airports, and rail yards), and zero-emission fleet transition planning for transit and other heavy-duty fleets.
- Performs other specialized technical, advisory, and future-proofing technology scouting responsibilities associated with this position as appropriate.
Position Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline required; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng./ PE) license required, with active registration in a Canadian province (or eligibility and an active plan to obtain licensure via international license transfer/inter-provincial mobility).
- 15+ years of experience in hydrogen, clean fuels, natural gas, or related energy infrastructure systems.
- Demonstrated expertise in planning, conceptual design, and engineering for gaseous fuels, multi-modal transport applications, and high-pressure hydrogen refueling stations (including permanent and temporary installations).
- Deep understanding of hydrogen safety codes and standards, including Canadian standards such as CAN/BNQ 1784-000 and CSA Z662, alongside relevant US standards including NFPA 2 and ASME B31.12.
- Proven track record of working effectively as a senior technical advisor, Engineer of Record, or lender's technical advisor on landmark clean energy projects, due diligence assignments, and technical feasibility evaluations.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to engage potential clients (such as utilities, municipal governments, and transit operators), regulatory agencies, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
