With a portfolio of more than 4,500 crossings around the world, we’ve delivered landmark bridges that carry pedestrians, roads, railways, and pipelines. We are looking for an experienced senior bridge construction inspector to support our bridge construction projects in Alberta. You will be supporting bridge and structures construction projects throughout Alberta with a focus on projects for major clients including Alberta Transportation, City of Edmonton and City of Calgary. This position requires a solid track record of bridge construction inspection and administration assignments for bridges and structures delivered through design-bid-build and design-build projects and requires familiarity with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors and/or major municipal standards and project delivery methods.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
With minimal supervision, independently performs all aspects of bridge construction and contract administration assignments including development of plans, schedules, contracts, and procedures for an assigned project, or a designated area of a large project. Maintains accurate site records and leads the preparation and submission of project reports. Demonstrates expertise in applying engineering theories and general industry practices to resolve difficult problems encountered in the field. Provides leadership, mentorship and functional guidance to junior staff in similar roles. Willingness to relocate to construction site locations is expected.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborates with contractors, designers and owner’s representatives for the completion of complex construction assignments involving standard and major bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and any other associated infrastructure.
- Provides technical evaluation of work in progress and resolution of constructability issues.
- Maintains first-level quality assurance to confirm that the installation of all work is in accordance with the plans, specifications, and industry standards.
- Supervises construction engineering work and provides technical expertise for the construction engineering disciplines, as well as survey personnel.
- Reviews and interprets design drawings and specifications to ensure current revision level and feasibility to perform technical execution of work.
- Provides resolution for difficult and/or complex technical engineering problems across disciplines and coordinates application of solutions.
- Review and comment on shop drawing submittals and collaborating with the Engineers of Record.
- Provides technical guidance to site personnel regarding installations while working with a variety of Engineers of Record.
- Ensures that all work is installed in accordance with plans, specifications, and industry and quality standards. This includes ensuring that all tests and inspections are performed, witnessed, and documented in accordance with approved procedures.
- Collaborates with contractors on site to eliminate any hazards associated with the work that may adversely affect the environment or the safety or health of employees.
- Ensures that all personnel engage in safe work practices in compliance with site-specific safety procedures and industry standards.
- Estimating: Review and analyze data relative to the project, complete plans and specification reviews for projects, assist with preparation of a bid.
- Monitors construction schedules and prepares progress appraisal. Provides schedule and progress appraisal data to project managers and owner’s representatives.
- Leads or participates in regular site meetings in accordance with contract requirements.
- Maintains a daily log for permanent record of project construction, as well as engineering data for the final project turnover and report. Initiates and maintains records, back-charge procedures, progress reports, etc., as required.
- Maintains construction technical catalogs, supplier data, and other literature pertaining to the project.
- Interfaces with the client and upper-level management.
- Performs other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.
Additional Details
- Extensive and varying experience in construction inspection roles on bridge projects for major clients in Alberta such as Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors, City of Edmonton and/or City of Calgary.
- Adept at reviewing safety plans, construction plans, project schedules, and engineering drawings.
- Demonstrated ability to support multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
- Willing to supervise and mentor the next generation of bridge construction inspectors.
- Must be an excellent communicator with strong emotional intelligence.
- Ability to effectively use MS Office computer software and familiarity with industry standard project management tools to manage cost and schedule as required on a project-by-project basis.
- Must be willing and able to travel.
- Position is available to be centered out of Edmonton or Calgary.
- Must have reliable transportation and a valid AB driver’s license.
- Must be registered or able to become registered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), or the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET). A professional designation is preferred.
- May be occasionally required to travel out-of-Province.
- Ability to freely access all points of a construction site in a wide-range of climates and environments.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- A degree or diploma in a related engineering discipline is required, plus at least 5+ years of related experience in bridge construction inspection.
- Experience with major clients in Alberta, such as Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors, City of Edmonton and/or City of Calgary is preferred.
SKILLS/COMPETENCIES:
Requires proficiency in engineering and construction-related processes, as well as industry practices. Also requires excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as demonstrated leadership skills. In addition, familiarity with CAD and other software packages typically associated with engineering and construction is required, and the proven ability for performing in a lead capacity on a project.
