Job Description:
Parsons is looking for an amazingly talented Human Factors Engineer to join our team!
What You’ll Be Doing:
Human Factors Design and Research:
Conduct user research, including task analysis, cognitive load assessments, and user surveys, to understand the needs and limitations of end-users in relation to complex systems and infrastructure.
Collaborate with design engineers, system integrators, and safety experts to incorporate human-centered design principles into system architecture, interfaces, and overall system performance.
Apply principles of ergonomics, usability, and cognitive engineering to design environments, workstations, tools, and systems that enhance user performance and reduce error rates.
Develop user profiles and personas to inform system design and optimize user interactions in high-stakes environments like control rooms, transportation systems, and industrial settings.
System and Interface Design:
Design and evaluate user interfaces (UI) for control systems, monitoring dashboards, and other technological systems to ensure they are intuitive, accessible, and aligned with human cognitive capabilities.
Ensure that the design of physical spaces, including workstations and control centers, meets ergonomic standards, reducing physical strain and enhancing comfort for operators and users.
Optimize the design of systems for both physical and mental tasks, ensuring the workload is appropriately distributed between human operators and automated systems.
Human-Machine Interaction:
Study human-machine interaction (HMI) to ensure that users can effectively operate and interact with control systems, machinery, and automation technologies in both normal and emergency scenarios.
Work with control engineers to design user-friendly controls, displays, and alerts to ensure operators can easily interpret system statuses and respond quickly to abnormal conditions.
Conduct simulations and usability testing to evaluate user interaction with systems, collecting feedback to iteratively refine designs and improve usability.
Safety and Risk Assessment:
Analyze human error factors and develop strategies to minimize risk by enhancing system reliability and simplifying user tasks.
Identify potential risks related to human factors and design systems that reduce the likelihood of operator error, miscommunication, or fatigue.
Collaborate with safety and risk management teams to develop risk assessments and safety protocols for systems and processes that directly involve human operators.
Training and Usability Testing:
Conduct user training programs and simulations to ensure that end-users are familiar with new systems, interfaces, and control mechanisms.
Perform usability testing and human-in-the-loop simulations to assess system design, providing actionable insights and recommendations for design improvement based on user feedback.
Develop training materials and user manuals to ensure safe and efficient operation of systems in line with human-centered design principles.
Collaboration with Multidisciplinary Teams:
Collaborate with engineers, designers, ergonomists, and system integrators to ensure human factors principles are integrated throughout the design and implementation phases of infrastructure projects.
Provide expertise in human factors during the system integration process, ensuring all subsystems work cohesively and are optimized for user interactions.
Assist in system validation and verification, ensuring designs meet usability and safety standards before final deployment.
Continuous Improvement and Research:
Stay up-to-date with the latest research and advancements in human factors engineering, ergonomics, and human-computer interaction.
Advocate for the application of emerging technologies and methodologies that improve system usability and performance, integrating new insights into the design and operation of infrastructure systems.
Develop and promote best practices for human factors design within the organization and across project teams.
What Required Skills You’ll Bring:
Education:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Human Factors Engineering, Ergonomics, Cognitive Psychology, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
Certification in Human Factors Engineering (e.g., BCPE - Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics) is a plus.
Experience:
Minimum of 10 years of experience in human factors engineering, with a focus on system design, human-computer interaction, and ergonomics in complex environments.
Proven track record of applying human-centered design principles to infrastructure, transportation systems, or industrial control systems.
Experience in usability testing, task analysis, and cognitive workload analysis.
Skills & Knowledge:
Strong knowledge of human-centered design principles, ergonomics, usability engineering, and cognitive systems engineering.
Expertise in user interface design, human-machine interaction, and control systems design.
Familiarity with ergonomic assessment tools, user research methodologies, and usability testing techniques.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Strong analytical skills and experience with data collection and analysis to inform design decisions.
What Desired Skills You’ll Bring:
Certifications:
Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE) or equivalent certification in human factors and ergonomics.
Certified Usability Analyst (CUA) or similar professional designations.
Industry Experience:
Experience in transportation infrastructure, control room design, industrial automation, or healthcare systems.
Knowledge of design standards related to workplace ergonomics, operator safety, and system usability.
Technological Expertise:
Familiarity with ergonomic design software, usability testing platforms, and simulation tools.
Understanding of control system interfaces and experience with human-machine interaction (HMI) tools in complex environments (e.g., SCADA, PLC systems).
