Job Description:

Parsons is looking for an amazingly talented Jr. Arborist and Environmental Site Supervisor/Jr. Arborist​ to join our team! In this role you will get to work closely with a variety of professionals on multiple projects across a wide range of public and private sector clients.

What You'll Be Doing:

This is primarily a field-based role where you will execute projects including, but not limited to, site supervision of environmental investigation programs, the collection of environmental data to support environmental site assessments (Monitoring programs, Phase I and Phase II ESAs), and conducting tree surveys to support planning and design of infrastructure projects.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Supervise subcontractors associated with environmental field programs, including Site Remediation programs (Environmental excavations and implementation of various in-situ remediation techniques).
  • Oversee health and safety for Parsons’ and subcontract staff on remediation and environmental investigation programs.
  • Conduct tree inventories and assessments, preparation of tree protection plans to support building of various infrastructure.
  • Work closely with project coordinators/managers, using your interpersonal and organizational skills, to communicate project data findings and timelines to ensure projects are completed on time and budget.
  • Complete monitoring and groundwater sampling programs utilizing a wide variety of field equipment.
  • Soil and sediment sample recovery, field testing, and documentation during drilling, test pitting and excavation activities.
  • Maintain excellent field notes, including safety forms, project field reports, and laboratory chain-of-custody forms.
  • Operation of various types of field monitoring equipment (e.g. GPS, data loggers, survey level, combustible gas meters, etc.).
  • Always ensure health and safety policies are followed at all sites and on all projects.
  • Perform other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.

What Required Skills You'll Bring:

  • Diploma in earth sciences, arboriculture, environmental technology and engineering applications, engineering or similar programs
  • 1+ years of applicable field experience as a field technician supporting environmental assessment / remediation / arborist and/or infrastructure redevelopment projects.
  • Experience with supervising drilling, collecting and logging soil samples, collecting groundwater and surface water samples, overseeing remediation.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to personal vehicle
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills and ability to operate self-sufficiently and safely in the field
  • This work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; lifting; recurring bending or similar activities so willingness to perform physically demanding work in various weather conditions should be expected
  • The ability to work on out-of-town assignments for extended periods of time.
  • Oral communications skills and ability to operate self-sufficiently in the field.
  • Resourceful, quick thinking and handy, ability to solve technical problems in the field

What Desired Skills You'll Bring:

  • Certified as or ability to be certified as Environmental Technician (C.E.T)
  • Previous experience conducting tree inventories
  • Knowledge and understanding of tree health/structure and conditions that may affect the health/structure
  • Ability to accurately identify trees common to Southern Ontario (winter ID an asset)
  • Ability to identify defects of a tree.
  • Academic and practical experience with soil classification
