Job Description:
Parsons is looking for an amazingly talented Environmental and Drainage Engineer to join our team! In this role you will get to ensure that drainage systems are designed, implemented, and maintained in an environmentally sustainable manner. This role combines technical expertise in civil and environmental engineering with a strong commitment to sustainability, flood risk management, and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate will be proactive, innovative, and dedicated to providing high-quality engineering solutions that minimize environmental impact while meeting project objectives.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Design, analyze, and implement stormwater and drainage systems for new and existing developments, ensuring that systems meet environmental standards and local regulations.
- Conduct hydraulic and hydrological modeling and analysis to assess the performance and efficiency of drainage systems.
- Develop drainage plans, including the sizing and placement of culverts, pipes, retention ponds, and other infrastructure to manage surface water runoff.
- Assess the impact of drainage systems on local watercourses, flood risk, and the surrounding environment.
- Ensure all drainage designs and systems comply with local, state, and federal environmental regulations, including those related to water quality and pollution control.
- Conduct environmental impact assessments (EIAs) for drainage projects, ensuring the preservation of natural habitats and minimal disruption to the ecosystem.
- Manage and monitor the environmental aspects of drainage construction projects, ensuring sustainable practices are implemented.
- Conduct flood risk assessments and mitigation strategies, ensuring that the drainage system effectively reduces the risk of flooding in urban and rural areas.
- Develop and recommend flood management solutions, including floodplain mapping, flood risk modeling, and drainage infrastructure upgrades.
- Collaborate with other engineers and stakeholders to ensure integrated flood management and drainage solutions.
- Conduct site surveys, data collection, and field investigations to assess the conditions of existing drainage systems and identify areas for improvement.
- Analyze topographical, geological, and hydrological data to inform drainage designs and environmental assessments.
- Monitor the performance of existing drainage systems and recommend necessary upgrades or maintenance actions.
- Promote sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), green infrastructure, and low-impact development (LID) solutions in project designs.
- Ensure that the drainage system minimizes its environmental footprint, considering water reuse, infiltration, and energy-efficient design.
- Stay updated with new technologies and methodologies in environmental and drainage engineering, incorporating best practices to improve system performance and sustainability.
- Work with multidisciplinary teams, including civil engineers, environmental consultants, planners, and local authorities, to deliver integrated solutions.
- Prepare technical reports, proposals, and presentations for clients, government agencies, and stakeholders to communicate project objectives and findings.
- Ensure client and stakeholder needs are met, addressing concerns and proposing cost-effective, sustainable solutions.
- Assist in the management of environmental and drainage engineering projects, including preparing project timelines, cost estimates, and budgets.
- Monitor project progress, quality, and scope, ensuring that deadlines and budgets are adhered to.
- Support project managers in the procurement process and manage contractors during the construction phase to ensure quality control and adherence to designs.
- Develop and implement maintenance plans for drainage systems, including regular inspections and performance evaluations.
- Provide recommendations for maintaining drainage infrastructure to ensure long-term performance and compliance with environmental standards.
What Required Skills You’ll Bring:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in environmental and drainage engineering.
- Bachelors Degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related field
- Experience in designing, analyzing, and implementing stormwater management systems, flood risk assessments, and environmental impact assessments.
- Strong knowledge of local and national environmental regulations, water quality standards, and drainage design guidelines.
- Proficiency in engineering software and tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, StormCAD, or similar software for drainage and hydrology modeling.
- Strong understanding of hydrology, hydraulics, drainage design principles, and environmental protection.
- Experience with environmental monitoring, pollution control, and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS).
- Familiarity with flood risk management techniques and software (e.g., HEC-RAS, flood modeling).
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex environmental and drainage issues.
- Professional certifications such as Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Environmental Professional (CEnv).
- Knowledge of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) for spatial analysis and data visualization.
- Familiarity with sustainability frameworks and environmental certification programs.
- Experience in project management, including budgeting, scheduling, and client communication.
- Ability to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams, including environmental consultants, contractors, and local authorities.
